Re: Expert testimony

I worked once with a fellow who had moved here from the USSR. He said that over there, the judge would *appiont* an expert (at least in accident recon cases). That was the only expert to offer testimony. Sounds nice: never to be contradicted. I'm sceptical of the quality of the results, though. I have never heard of anything like it in the US, or the judge mandating opposing experts work together, etc. I've heard of judges excluding testimony they didn't feel could meet the requirements outlined in Federal Rules of Evidence. That seems pretty common, actually.
