I read both Ed's and Pauls response's and I agree with both. I'm currently In Law Enforcement and have a reconstruction business. I have the best of both worlds and make a nice sum of money on the side. The benefits of staying in Law Enforcement is when you testify. The attorney that you work for will use you being an officer to help your creditability. (And it does). Also, it helps keep your skills sharp. I don't know when you are able to retire or when you can vest out. But with 14 years on the job it would be ashame to quit when your so close to retirement.
If you need any help starting up your business (setting up a corporation, tax information etc.) please feel to get ahold of me and I can help get you pointed in the right direction.
Best of luck.
Tim
