I left a police service with 18 years on the job (we have a 30 year retirement).
Checking the calender, I left one year ago this week. All the responses give
valuable advice. I will add the following:
1.Talk to as many people as you can at conferences etc. that have made the
same move. Everyone I spoke to suggested it would take two to five years to
get "in" with the insurance companies.
2. Get yourself known and make contacts. Make yourself available for
presentations etc. Insurance, legal, and various safety transportation
associations love to have a police officer as a guest speaker.
3. I'll add to Ed's comment "#2- Be diversified... have some other skill or
specialty that can fill in the hard times" It can be a skill or speciality that
is related to AR work. Before leaving the police service, I developed and
started teaching AI related courses for a transportation safety organization.
This provides 6-10 weeks of employment per year. Secondly, I went and got my
Commercial Drivers Licence prior to leaving the police service - for two reasons.
First - it gives me some practical experience to go along with the AR theory and
secondly it provides me some part time work (I generally do a weekend trip a
couple times a month). The driving experience has given me an invaluable
insight into commercial vehicle operations.
