Gene,

Oblique collisons will and do active airbags. The delta-v and PDOF are directly functions of the at-impact speed and approach angle of the van. Sensors away from the crush region are also employed by distributed systems and also have to record the designated values, which may be Jerk, acceleration, or other programmed considerations. Certain frontal collisons (narrow stiff structure impacts) may not activate the system or may not activate it soon enough.

I think the discussion indicates the activation may be more complex than assumed. Certain micro-machined sensors can record delta-v and other characteristics in a more than a single axis.
