We looked into this awhile ago. We have and use a variety of digital camera systems. What we found is a less clear picture than the 35 mm photograph, but greater ease of interaction with the computer. The big problem was storage. If you write a report and insert a few images (forbid a color photo) the file is often too huge to store on a single 5.25 disc. Larger disc and CD storage are available now, and have not been investigated. What we had at the time was files that eat up huge chunks of memory, or using the "hard copy" of the report as the end result for storage. I think they're great for certain conditions, but for the typical police report/investigation invest in good 35 mm SLR auto focus cameras and good flash systems.
