I am presently preparing for the prosecution of a vehicular homicide case. The incident involves the collision of the front of a passenger vehicle with the rear of a parked tractor-trailer. The impact was straight-on and was not accompanied by any skid marks. The speedometer needle was frozen at 53 m.p.h. Examination of the speedometer backing under U.V. light showed two "slap" mark. One "slap" mark was at 48 m.p.h. and one "slap" mark was at 51 m.p.h. I am looking for any literature on the reliability of such evidence as a predictor of impact speed.
