Rear-end collision speed

I just happened on an equation for calculating the relative speed of two
vehicles in a rearender as functions of the A and B stiffness coefficients
of both cars, the residual crush of the lead car, and the reduced mass of
the two-car system. Too many fractions in the equation to type it all here.
I never saw this equation before, but it looks very useful.
Can anyone point me toward a reference or derivation??
