What is happening to the vehicle may not be the same as what is happening to each occupant in the passenger compartment.
Particularly for occupants not sitting at the CG of the vehicle.

>From a 1974 reference [1]
Delta-V is defined as the velocity change experienced by the passenger compartment during a collision.
Its calculation is limited to those times during which the resultant acceleration exceeds 1 g.
(i.e. the duration of a given collision contact).

>From a 1997 paper [2]:
Large accelerations can occur at locations other than the center of gravity.
..the additional accelerations due to offset from the center of gravity and rotational velocity may have dramatic effects on the magnitude of accupant exposure and consideration should be given to localized Delta-V calculations as suggested in [3]
