All vehicles must meet the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS; CMVSS in Canada). Section 301 requires vehicles under 10,000 lbs be tested for fuel system integrity. The tests involve a frontal barrier impact, and rear and side impacts by a moving barrier. Following each impact the vehicle is placed in a fixture and rolled on it's side then it's roof and then the other side to see if any fuel leaks out. These tests are very thorough. Only a vehicle with a well designed fuel system will pass.
