Some of them weren't based on any type of analysis whatsoever. I remember seeing one of the first animations to be shown on CNN, long before any real analysis had been done. It showed the Mercedes doing a "barrel roll" after colliding with the pillar, and changing rotation direction when no outside force was (apparently) acting on the car. That had to be some pretty creative physics!
