Recall that Mr. Martinez' article is described as a "Review and Update"

I agree with Mr. Mitchell, but don't just get the book, take a class too.

Have seen ped crash videos that demonstrate the hat phenomenon, and investigated a couple of collisions where it occured - most recently was a ballcap, glasses, and an unlit cigarette, all within a 2 or 3 foot radius of each other... a possible theory (though we'll never know for sure) being that the ped was attempting to light a cigarette as he crossed the street and was struck.

bad news is the lighter was about 80 feet further down the street...

evidence can be displaced...

So it happens, but be careful with it and get educated so you understand clearly how it fits in as a part of the whole, and in the meantime use someone with the specific training (and pick their brain while you do).
