I would agree your method for adjusting for grade was correct.
Adjustment for grade would apply to any decelerating object, be it an automobile or 100K truck..acceleration is still at work!

I would submit that adjusting twice (level and then to positive) provides the same result as adjusting once (5 (-2 to +3)). As you used the same vehicle as involved in the accident for your test, I believe you've pretty well removed any potential for argument on the validity of your test (pilot error excluded).
