Alan,

Be certain to thoroughly examine the DRL system to verify if it was working and on which lamps. I own a 1996 GMC Yukon which has DRL's that use the low beam lamp on a composite lamp system. Check the fuses to see if somebody had removed the fuse for the DRL system. Many are linked with other systems, but the owner may disable them to eliminate what many people consider a nuisance. My DRL's are linked to foglamps, but I do not have any installed.
Additionally, DRL systems are disabled once you activate the parking brake system. People whom do not want to disable other systems will often activate the parking brake just enough to turn them off. A word to the wise for GM vehicles. There has been rumer that using the parking brake in this fashion will cause unnecessary wear in GM vehicles.
If you can get your hands on Car and Driver magazine, they had an article concerning these issues. Sorry, but I do not know the volume/issue numbers.
