I agree with Ed, my impression has always been that you could get a "match" on the make up of two samples of paint, for which you would need your suspect vehicle (and a search warrant or court order...), but I'm unaware of any paint "dna registery" whereby you could analyze a sample of paint and identify it's individual source. Perhaps if you had a particular make and model you might be able to track maufacturing records - i.e.' GM used this praticular red paint on it's 1/2 ton trucks in '75...' the drawback there being they then probably used it on their Suburbans and Monte Carlos, etc., and it was produced by a company that also sold it to Earl Schibe where it was used at 185 locations nationwide to paint anything that moves..
