Dan,

You are on the right track. The delta v represents the MAGNITUDE of the speed change, but velocity is a vector quantity. First you need to compute the delta v, and also the PDOF which is the resultant line of action of the forces applied. Once you know the angle of force application, and magnitude, you can solve for the vector components. I suspect you'll find the component in the linear axis (parallel to the sensor operation) received a lesser delta v that than the resultant velocity change.
